Teenage Pregnancy

It was March 5, 1997 at 5:15 in the morning, after tossing and turning all night I finally woke up not feeling too good. I got out of bed and went up to tell my mom I did not want to go to school. I went into the living room to try and relax. It was very difficult to do as I had the most uncomfortable cramps of my life. Finally, after trying just about everything I knew to try, I went in and told my mom I thought it was time. My mother quickly got out of bed. It was 8:30 in the morning now. “Mom I really don’t feel good.” I cried to her as she held me in her arms and cried with me. She was always extraordinary at making me feel better, as any good mother is. So we got up and decided to go out to eat, and then maybe we would make it to the zoo to walk around, this sort of thing could take hours. After getting ready we went out back to our car; which had a flat tire. We drove the car up the street to my grandparents house and borrowed their car. After that we went to my boyfriend’s house and picked him up. At breakfast I was feeling extremely irritable. Nothing sounded good to eat so I ordered a chocolate malt. I was not comfortable sitting, standing in one place, eating, drinking; nothing was helping me to fee

As adults it is our responsibility to keep children aware of the outcome of having unsafe sex. Today is very different from the Sixties when all of America’s youth proclaimed the virtues of free love. Now in the middle of real life we are realizing that free love often comes with a hidden price tag. While young people may be informed about the birds and bees, many are not taking the appropriate steps when approaching sex and relationships. We need to use more caution, maturity and foresight than our predecessors.

About 80% of young people have sex as a teenager. That is just over 8 of us here in the room took the chance in becoming a teenage parent or contracting a sexually transmitted disease. Currently 65 million people have an incurable sexually transmitted disease; that correlates to 22% of people in the United States or more than 2 of us in this room that have a disease we acquired during sexual activity that is with us for the rest of our lives, now that is what you call a lasting memory!

So why are so many teenagers sexually active? We have found that even today in our society many teens feel pressured into having sex. Unfortunately, there is also a lack of role models for many adolescents. With staggering numbers of single parents and divorced parents our children walk around the streets craving attention and affection. Often times the only way it can be found is through intercourse. Even teens themselves question their judgment; however, it is usually after the fact, because 63% of teens wish they had waited to have sex.

As we all well know, teens should not be parents. Teenagers should be hanging out with their friends trying to figure out how to scrape up a few dollars to buy bait for their fishing trip, or get a ride to the mall to hang out; not sitting at home ALONE trying to figure out how to scrape up a few dollars to buy diapers or formula. We also know that one possible way to prevent pregnancy is to use some type of birth control method. That is it. That is
