Censorship on the Internet

Censorship is a word of many meanings. In its broadest sense it refers to suppression of information, ideas, or artistic expression by anyone, whether government officials, church authorities, private pressure groups, or speakers, writers, and artists themselves. It also means the suppression or attempted suppression of something regarded as objectionable. Censorship may take place at any point in time, whether before an utterance occurs, prior to its widespread circulation, or by punishment of communicators after distribution of their messages, so as to dissuade others from similar expression.

As long as humans have sought to communicate, others have sought to prevent them. Every day someone tries to restrict or control what can be or has been said, shown, written, sung, or broadcast. Almost every idea ever thought has proved objectionable to one person or another, and almost everyone has sometimes felt the world would be a better place if only "so and so" would go away.

There are almost as many justifications offered for the suppression of communication as there are would-be censors, but at root the incentive is always the same. It is a fear that if the expression is not curtailed, it will d

The national information infrastructure or the information superhighway or the internet or whatever you're in the mood to call it makes it possible to reach your audience no matter who your audience is and no matter where they are. There's no editor standing between you and your readers who is changing what you want to say, changing your content, shortening it or lengthening it or altering it to make it "acceptable" for society to view.

Films and videos have also been censored under theatre legislation of publicly-exhibited films. Film and video classification in Canada is a provincial responsibility that varies between provinces. Canada features a separate rating for all videos and all provinces except Quebec must include Canadian Home Video ratings on all rental videos. These ratings are based on averaging film classifications assigned by the seven provincial boards. There is no federal legislation prohibiting selling or renting adult videos to minors although retailers are not to do so.

The governments would like to have the control to view all the information that is circulating on the internet. They would love to read our private e-mails, sit in on chat room conversations and to restrict us on the internet in any way possible. As it is now, the internet is full of people expressing their precious right of free speech. The success of the internet is due to the fact that it does not limit its users. It is a place where people can speak their mind without being punished for what they say or how they say it. Government censorship threatens to destroy the freedoms of the internet that the majority of societies treasure.
