I think that the introduction did a very good job of preparing the reader for the stories about the tenements in New York. It gave the readers an idea of what the stories were about without giving too much information. It gave the reader a small view into the whole story.
The introduction also did a good job of introducing us to the author. This book was influenced strongly by the writer’s perspectives and opinions. It was important to understand his history and were he came to get his values. His hardships as an immigrant gave him a personal view on these types of hardships and may have given him a more honest opinion on these conditions. This book would give students a personal view of American History in one of its dark hours. It would help them understand that not everything was going good during this time period. Many people in the country were struggling for survival. These facts are often overlooked in American History. This book has unlimited educational benefits to any American social studies student.
