A Character Analysis of Brett in The Sun Also Rises
At first glance, she may seem like nothing more than a drunken whore. Which, is exactly how she, Lady Ashley, is portrayed in Ernest Hemingway’s book, The Sun Also Rises. However, I believe there is more to Lady Ashley, generally known as Brett, than may appear to the naked eye. Hemingway writes with very little description about the characters in this book. Therefore, much of the character development is left for the reader to figure out. Even though there is not much description about her, a great deal can be determined about Brett’s character by the way she handles herself in certain situations and her interaction with the other characters. More importantly, though, is to determine what Hemmingway was trying to accomplish with Brett’s character, and why she acts the way she does. Brett is a selfish and needy person, which is very obvious from the context of the book. She uses men to get what she wants and needs. She demands much more than any single person is capable of supplying her with. As a result, Brett has some sort of relationship (not necessarily physical) with six different men throughout the book: Jake Barnes, Mike Campbell, Robert Cohn, Pedro Romero, Count Mippipopolous, and her soon-to-be ex-husban
Brett is not an admirable character, which may be a result of unsuccessful relationships Hemmingway had with women. She uses men to get what she wants and never thinks about anybody but herself. Brett does not have a job or anything to keep her occupied, so she spends her time mooching off of men. Brett spends most of her time drunk so she doesn’t have to worry about all the troubles in her life. She tries to come across as being normal, but really she is constantly plagued with a feeling of self-revulsion. Brett does not like the person who she has become, and believes her sole purpose in life is to satisfy men. And although she feels badly about the way she treats men, she is not willing to change the one thing that makes her life livable. So, although she may come across as just an immoral tramp that likes to play men, really she is just a sad person who is trying to find some sort of meaning in her life. Brett often tries to hide the fact that she is wounded by a damaged self-worth, mostly by getting drunk and constantly doing something socially. When she is drunk or involved in a social event, she doesn’t have to think about all the problems in her life. Hemingway doesn’t supply much background information about Brett that would explain why she feels the way she does about herself. Mike does, however, reveal that, “Ashley, chap she got the title from…Always made Brett sleep on the floor. Finally, when he got really bad, he used to tell her he’d kill her. Always slept with a loaded service revolver…She hasn’t had an absolutely happy life…Damne
