Movie anaysis
Seven years in Tibet portrays two different cultures which confronts each other and at the same time, learning their virtues of one another. This movie touches the story of an Austrian mountaineer Heinrich Harrer, who is once an egocentric and selfish man. His expedition has thought him to be a sensitive individual and also realizes the importance of relationships when he set out to climb Nanga Parbat in the Himalayas. The story “begins” after their unsuccessful attempt to climb Nanga Parbat which they ultimately ended up at the POW camp for five years. Due to his obstinate and self-made character, Heinrich Harrer was unsuccessful in escaping alone. Eventually, they managed to escape in a group effort. The city of Lhasa is where Heinrich Harrer’s “journey” begins… Upon reaching Lhasa, Heinrich Harrer and Peter were confronted by two Tibetans. As they had a language barrier, the Tibetans started to bawl, indicating the unwelcomeness of the two foreigners. Heinrich Harrer not only did not comply, he chased them away and made fun of their accents. This scene portrays the white with a more superior role and that the Asians are conservative and timid. Next, comic relief was used here when Heinrich Harre
r and Peter were “greeted” as they entered Lhsas. Their unwelcome presences were greeted by the Tibetans through sticking out of their tongues and making faces. Instead of feeling unwanted, Heinrich Harrer laughed with amusement. The film-makers are using unique cultures to crack a humorous scene that are supposed to be funny to the majority audience. Another example whereby Heinrich Harrer found it peculiar when the Tibetans dug up worms and put them in a safer location as they might be their mothers in the previous lives. The way the Asians are portrayed here can be seen as uncanny to others depending on cultural differences and beliefs. My view to this movie is that film-makers tend to stereotype Asians as being inferior and backdated. All they portray is only the down-sides and nothing much to the achievements that they have done.
