In the story “Gulliver’s Travels”, written by Jonathan Swift, the protagonist (Gulliver) voyages around the world. During his travels, Gulliver endures many adventures that bring him to exotic lands and nations, one of these nations being the country of Houyhnhnms. In this land Gulliver has found what he considers the most virtuous beings on the planet. The poem takes place in England in the 18th century. The protagonist, Belinda, had a lock of hair cut from her head by her friend. The event was pre-meditated and started a large dispute between the families of Belinda and her lock rapist.

The Yahoos are more animalistic. Described by Swift as difficult to teach and polluted by self-interest. Swift ironically makes the physical characteristics of the Yahoo closer to that of a human. This seems to be no mistake as the ideals of the Yahoo’s are also closer to that of many humans. Gulliver despises the race of Yahoo’s and finds disappointment in himself for seeing more relationship in this race then the race he reveres. Gulliver will never be a Houhynhnm, despite the appreciation he has for the race, he is still more related to the Yahoo.

“the Rape of the Lock” by Alexander Pope is a humorous indictment of the vanities and idleness of 18th-century high society. Literary scholars have revered the poem as a “mock-epic” in that society is the reason for the poem’s failure to rise to epic standards.

Swifts depiction of the Houhynhnm and Yahoo can be viewed as a metaphor for human virtue
