Affirmative Action

Many people have no idea what Affirmative Action is. The reason is that many people do not care to know what it is. Affirmative Action is probably the most misunderstood civil rights issue of our time. The question is whether it is good or bad. Many people believe the efforts of Affirmative Action have encouraged what is called reverse discrimination. Reverse discrimination is the concept that qualified workers are not being hired because Affirmative Action forces companies to diversify their working environment. Not only is this notion untrue, but it comes from the people that do not want Affirmative Action to work, and make it their duty to do just that.

The Civil Rights Act of 1964 made discrimination in the workplace unlawful. In 1965, Congress passed the Voting Rights act, which gave the power to take steps to eliminate discrimination. That same year president Lyndon Johnson gave the U.S. Department of Labor Affirmative Action responsibility. Affirmative Action has forced many companies and institutions to analyze the demographics of their workforce.
