Many people have no idea what Affirmative Action is. The reason is that many people do not care to know what it is. Affirmative Action is probably the most misunderstood civil rights issue of our time. The question is whether it is good or bad. Many people believe the efforts of Affirmative Action have encouraged what is called reverse discrimination. Reverse discrimination is the concept that qualified workers are not being hired because Affirmative Action forces companies to diversify their working environment. Not only is this notion untrue, but it comes from the people that do not want Affirmative Action to work, and make it their duty to do just that.
The Civil Rights Act of 1964 made discrimination in the workplace unlawful. In 1965, Congress passed the Voting Rights act, which gave the power to take steps to eliminate discrimination. That same year president Lyndon Johnson gave the U.S. Department of Labor Affirmative Action responsibility. Affirmative Action has forced many companies and institutions to analyze the demographics of their workforce. The bottom line is that reverse discrimination isn’t a problem because Affirmative Action has never been able to work the way it was meant to work because of the either blatant racism or subconscious racism in this country. Minorities have never gotten an upper hand because of Affirmative Action. Sure a few people have benefited from the program. But in the grand scheme of things it has failed.
The view that was expressed in this essay is unfortunately not the general view of the public. The reason I believe the general public does not believe in the view expressed in this paper is because the general public is composed of a lot of white males. I don’t think there is one person who is a minority that believes Affirmative Action has gone too far. It does not amaze me that this country does not even realize the racism that’s still prominent in this country. Reverse discrimination is definitely a laughable notion. The reason why the notion is acceptable is a mystery to me. The discrimination behind it is not a mystery. The reason why discrimination and racism still exists is the mystery. Our country needs a makeover. Affirmative Action was supposed to help in that makeover. If something as simple as this will not work, will there ever be equality in this country? It is terrible that we need to even ask this question in this day and
