OUTLINE THE ISSUES THAT LED TO TENSION IN ENGLAND IN1642. HOW ACURATE IS IT TO DESCRIBE THE CIVIL WAR AS A Prior to the outbreak of civil war in 1642, there were many issues, from both the long and short term , that added to a tension that was already near breaking point. Issues such as the imposition of Thorough in the 1630’s, and also the 11-year period of personal rule, were some of the major causes in the long term. Short term causes included the rebellions in Ireland and Scotland, and the impeachments of his two key advisors, Thomas Wentworth and Archbishop of Canterbury William Laud in the late 1630’s. Of the long term causes, it seems the one that had the biggest impact was the imposition of Thorough in the 1630’s. Thorough was Charles’ policy of implementing Arminianism throughout Britain, which involved total conformity and tolerated no criticism. Prior to 1633, the then Archbishop of London Laud had enforced the policy in the diocese of London, and upon promotion to the Archbishop of Canterbury, implemented it all through England.
