Charlottes Web
The book Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White tells the story of Wilbur, a young pig who is born on the Arable farm which is somewhere in the middle of America during the early 1950’s. Wilbur was born the runt of the litter and was almost killed by Mr. Arable until his young daughter Fern stops him. Mr. Arable then decides to give Wilbur to Fern to teach her a lesson, but Fern lovingly cares for Wilbur like a real human baby, even rolling him around in a baby carriage. After a few years, Fern was forced to sell Wilbur to her aunt and uncle, the Zuckermans, who lived on another farm nearby. Although Wilbur liked being on the farm at first, he started to get lonely and bored and he wanted a friend. However, none of the other farm animals had time to be his friend and/or wanted to be his friend at all. Wilbur got very sad until he met someone who would be his friend, a large, but kind spider named Charlotte. Although she was bold and clever, she also had a kind heart and Wilbur was happy to find his first friend. As time went by, Wilbur grew bigger and didn’t know until an old sheep told him that the Zuckermans were planning to kill him around Christmas time and turn him into bacon and ham. Wilbur was very upset because he loved b
The two main characters in the book were Wilbur and Charlotte, although the point of view shifts to Fern sometimes as well as rarely switch to some of the other human characters. Although all the farm animals in the book talked like the human characters, they retained their animal characteristics and acted and spoke as such. Templeton, the roguish and gluttonous rat is a perfect example of this. The story is mainly set in the farm of the Zuckermans, which most children might not understand since they haven’t lived on a farm. However, the story shows the power of friendship and the thoughts that Fern and her brother Avery have about the summer, school and having fun, which any child who reads it can easily identify with. Sadly though, Charlotte was too weak to move and was close to death. However, Wilbur was able to take her egg sac home to the farm with him and sadly said good-bye to his great friend, who died the next day. The baby spiders were born the next spring and Wilbur loved them like there were his own children, even crying when they left to make their own homes a few days later. However, three of the spiders decide to stay because they like the farm and Wilbur. While Wilbur loved them and all the rest of the spiders that came after, he always loved Charlotte most of all because there was no other spider like her. The obvious main theme of this book is showing the power of friendship. The emotional bond between Fern and Wilbur is a good example of this although the bond between Wilbur and Charlotte is a much deeper and stronger one. Charlotte cares deeply for Wilbur as a very good friend and is there to support him in his loneliness, to teach him, as well as to help save his life when he is in danger of being killed. Wilbur also cares deeply for Charl
