Media Language

After looking at four different news sites I have found that the following are the most important news articles.

On the BBC was the story about George Bush stating that he will defeat Iraq resistance. This is followed by Geoff Hoon’s article, stating that he will be sending more troops over to Iraq. The other main news article is the one to do with Bill Morris and workers’ rights.

On ITV the main story was about Geoff Hoon sending more troops over to Iraq. The ITV consider this to be of more importance than President Bush’s speech. This is only mentioned briefly in a small sentence. The other main news article is about the missing Lord Lucan.

On the Times Online, the main news article is about Geoff Hoon sending more troops over to Iraq, but this time no mention is made about President Bush’s speech. The other main news article this time is about Australia’s serial killers, which none of the other news websites mentioned anything about.

On the Sun, the main news article is about Sven’s speech stating that “Fans will die”. The other article of significant importance is about the chemical attack training, which had happened in one of London Tube Stations. No mention at all was made about Iraq, unlike the

The Times Online news page is again different to the other three as it is set out differently and seems very difficult to understand. The news is set out in two columns, as are the BBC and the ITV news pages. The main points of news are in a small font to the top left hand columns of the page and the main news stories are underneath with bold headings, giving readers an introduction in to what the story is about.

The language in all four is different in some ways. I will now discuss how this is and why the language in all four differs in different ways.

The Sun’s News page is set out differently from the above two as it looks very informal and the main story was different from the rest. It seems very easy to navigate and the information is not too cramped. It is similar to the ITV page in that it has a “Ticker Tape Scroller”, which scrolls through the latest information.

Personally I would prefer to use the Sun’s news page as it is very simple to navigate, it is wrote in a very informal language and has pictures which help to illustrate the text.
