People probably only read Of Mice and Men because it’s a short book. They probably don’t even know what it’s about only that they could finish it in a few days. I didn’t go into it with that view. My Dad has always loved that book and my brother had just finished reading it at school. My brother reading a book before me is pretty much unthinkable so I thought I had better hurry and read it too. I wasn’t really sure what it was about only that it had something to do with a retarded man. I admit that when I first went into it I thought it really couldn’t be all that good considering how short it was. Usually when people talk about good books its some 1000 page monstrosity that you can’t even get past the first sentence because it hurts your brain. That’s what most people see a good book as. The more you can’t understand it the better it is. Luckily, I’m shying away from that view and realizing that it doesn’t matter what people say or what the “intellects” think. If you can’t understand it or don’t like it then it’s not a good book. It only matters as to what the book says to you. If you can’t understand what a book is about then its not going to say anything to you. This book is small and straightf
orward but it said a heck of a lot of things to me. I hardly ever get upset when reading a book but when I finished reading this, I actually wept. All the hidden layers and the beauty of something so simple yet so profound.
They had that whole thing with the house that made me really sad. I really wanted to see them get that house and Lennie to get his rabbits. At the end when George admitted that it would never happen it made me so sad. I thought maybe he could get it and live there with Candy if only for the memory of Lennie. But then you realize that George was never going to get the house. There was never going to be any rabbits for Lennie. It was kinda like he made the whole thing up only to please Lennie. I guess that this could be some kind of clue as to what George’s personality is like. It seems to me that he really is a good guy and a nice person but he is only human. So he takes Lennie’s wages too and brings Candy into the lie. But at least Candy had something to live for and had something to worry about after his dog dies. So even that could be considered a kindness.
One person he isn’t in the story too much but is the hero of the story is Slim. He’s the guy that all the other guys worship. Who they all want to be like. You can tell right off that he’s a good guy when he doesn’t look down on Lennie and is nice to him and George. He listens to their story and doesn’t make any judgments. He understands. When Lennie kills Curly’s wife Slim feels sorry about it and knows that Lennie didn’t mean to do it on purpose and
