Woodrow Wilsons Presidency
Woodrow Wilson, who served two terms in office, was a great democratic leader in many areas. The accomplishments of his two terms are often overshadowed by his accomplishments of World War one. Wilson was a very good leader despite his poor health that he had to deal with since early childhood. As president he was always pushing for world peace and never afraid to show a bit of radical side when it came to making changes. He showed to be a great leader during World War one even though he was unsuccessful in avoiding it. When Wilson first became president he pushed for equality of opportunity for all men. He presented many new proposals to congress. He created new agencies such as the Federal Reserve Board and the Federal Trade Commission. Wilson was also accountable for the ratification of the 18th Amendment. In 1920 he passed the 19th Amendment which allowed women to vote. During his second term he was pressured by the southerners to allow segregation in Washington D.C. He stated that this would be in the interest of the blacks. It was only a matter of time before the German’s attacked a passenger boat carrying war weapons. In this sinking eleven hundred civilians died and one hundred and twenty eight of them were Americans. Even though he knew the war was wrong he could not let his personal feelings affect his decisions. He knew that this was what America had to do and addressed the people of the U.S. He also gave sympathies out families who had people going to war. On April 2, 1917, the United States went to war. Wilson did however show a strong side in world peace. All through his first term he aimed to prevent the war. He kept the U.S. neutral and often visited other countries trying to get them to agree on peace. Keeping the U.S. out of war helped him win the 1916 election. During his second term he found that he could no longer avoid the war. The German’s said that they would attack any ship at sea. The United States was not involved in the war that long and on November 11,1918 peace was signed and the war was over.
