Morpheus can be considered John the Baptist because he did great works before Neo was “born” into his new life outside the Matrix. John worked to free others of their bondage through water baptisms just as Morpheus freed people like Neo and Trinity from their “dream world.” It was John’s mission to “. . . Make straight the way for the Lord” Morpheus did the same so that Neo could fulfill his destiny. Because of the father figure that Morpheus establishes over Neo, he can also be considered a representation of God himself, or more simply the voice of God who tells Neo that he is the one sent to free man. The Lord sets prisoners free, the Lord gives sight to the blind, the Lord lifts up those who are bowed down, and the Lord loves the righteous.

Many other actions that the characters take in The Matrix directly correspond to events in the Bible. In the beginning, Agent Smith attempts to persuade Thomas Anderson to join his side in the effort to find Morpheus: “We're willing to wipe the slate clean, give you a fresh start, and all that we're asking in return is your cooperation in bringing a known terrorist to justice” (“Matrix”). Mr. Anderson refuses to accept Smith’s offer because he knows that Morpheus is the man he must trust. This event parallels Satan tempting Jesus in the wilderness during his forty day fast. Lucifer offered Jesus the world’s favor if he would worship him, to which Jesus replied: “Worship the Lord your God and serve Him only” (Luke 4.8). Also he tried to convince Jesus to leap from the highest point of the temple in Jerusalem so that nonbelievers would respond to God’s power, but Jesus showed his trust in his Father’s emphasis: “Do not put the Lord your God to the test”. Both Satan and Smith were unsuccessful in their attempts to convert Jesus/Neo.

Neo establishes himself as the Christ figure in several ways. In the beginning a literal reference is made whenever Neo sells a mini-disc: “Hallelujah. You’re my Savior man. My own personal Jesus Christ” (“Matrix”). He is “the one” who is destined to show the people the way by revealing the truth of their existence, as Jesus did through his Father’s guidance. Later, when Neo’s heart stops beating and Trinity helps to revive him, the scene can be viewed as Jesus’ dying on the cross and
