Deceiding on a Career Choice

Doesn’t it just seem like there are so many jobs out there that you just don’t know which one to pick; or is it that you just don’t know what you want to do? I know the basis for what I want to do and the field I am planning on majoring in, but the bi-

standards such as a double major or minor, are just out of my realm at this point.

This past summer I took a test called the Myers-Briggs testing that was to tell me what kind of profession or major would be the best for me. I am not going to lie, going into the Focus II session, I didn’t think that it would be very interesting and that it wouldn’t be able to tell me anything new about myself and what I should do with my life, but I was wrong. Through it many new concepts were brought to the table; in other words it helped to back choose a profession and helped me to branch out into additional professions and majors. One of the most helpful phases within the Focus II program was phase number two; it summarized my work activities interests. My top three strongest orientations were in the artistic field, persuading/leading field, and the technical field. All three of these categories thrive in a graphic design major. During this interview and through some articles I have seen on graphic designers I have more of a feel of what I could do with it, even inside an individual company. In addition to the many jobs you can attain with this major, there are also many promotions within these jobs that you are able to reach. Beginning designers usually receive on-the-job training, and normally need one to three years of training before they can advance to higher-level positions. (Williams 16) Experienced designers in large firms may advance to chief designer, design department head, or other supervisory positions. Some designers even decide to open their own firms. (Williams 71) I feel personally that obtaining a job with many outlets and many different advancement possibilities will help me to be more motivated, to try harder, and to get a good basis for the job I am in at the time. If I had a chance to be better—I would be, and with a better job lingering over me it would seem like there would always be a way up. Not like one of those dead-end jobs where you feel like you are going nowhere and will have no chance at ever going anywhere. There are so many paths to take but so much competition. That would always keep me on my toes and keep me trying to learn and take in as much as possible.
