The geography and the climate in the New World was a drastic change from Africa for the slaves. The African American slaves were sent to the New World because they were able to withstand the climate o

f working in the rice and tobacco plantations down in the south. The slaves were generally well built; they were stronger than the white indentured servants. The indentured servants who worked out in the plantations could not withstand the heat and humidity because it was hostile to their health. The labor was life draining in the environment. Thus many of the servants became very sick, and some even died out in the fields. Having ownerships of slaves was also an advantage for the slave owners because they would be easily replaced if one was gone, and if one was to run away, they would easily be caught due to their skin color. If a slave was ever to run away, they would not be familiar with the terrain around them and they did not speak their language. As the colonies progressed in time, the populations of slaves in the Chesapeake area of slaves weren’t because of imports, but because of fertility. By the 1750s, slaves accounted for nearly half the population of Virginia. In South Carolina, the slaves outnumbered whites two to one. As the economy in the colonies began to grow, the importance of having slaves became of a critical importance.
