“Society is a Monster. Why Would Someone Say This?”

“Society is a monster. Why would someone say this?”

The discrimination towards black people is shown by Crooks. He’s accepted that, as a black man, he will never be accepted, nor aspire to have dreams. He is resigned, he doesn’t like his reality, but has come to understand how society works and he has survived. “Maybe you guys better go. I ain't sure I want you in here no more. A colored man got to have some rights even if he don't like 'em” He also explains how he is to live because of who he is: "S'pose you didn't have nobody. S'pose you couldn't go into the bunk house and play rummy 'cause you was black.” But Crooks is not told otherwise by the people in his society, on the contrary, Curley shows us how they treat him and how they’ve got the right to treat him: “Well, you keep your place then, Nigger. I could get you strung un on a tree so easy it ain’t even funny.”

Crooks is also showing how lonely he is: “S'pose you had to sit out here an' read books. Sure you could play horseshoes till it got dark, but then you go

Towards women, the example is the only woman that appears in the story: Curley’s wife. We don’t even know her name, that shows how she’s nobody because she is a woman. If you don’t have a name, you’re nobody for the society. That’s how she is treated all the time. She’s lonely and frustrated with her reality, she doesn’t like it, and she wants to do something about it. “I get lonely, you can talk to people, but I can’t talk to nobody but Curley.” The way she is treated can be summarized in this statement made by George to Lennie: “Don’t you even take a look at that bitch”

The book also has a lot of metaphors that show us the way society may behave like a monster. One example is the one of Candy and his dog, he is forced by everybody to shoot his loyal companion. The dog it’s old and it’s not useful anymore, that’s why they killed it. Candy is old and won’t be useful anymore to the ranch because of his age and his hand. Candy knows this. He is forced to shoot his dog because of the comments of everybody else
