The Lottery

Several years back, there was a small village in New England where the people believed in a mysterious superstition. Every year, the people used to hold a lottery to please the Gods so they could eat a good harvest. This story brings to lime-light, the superstitious beliefs of villagers, which leads to unnecessary ‘sacrifice’ of human life, just for the sake of pleasing their deities. It also elucidates the atrocities and sufferings of women folk of the village, who are ostracized by the villagers.

In the beginning of the story, the author has made a clear difference between the description of the men of the village and their women. This is expressed in the scene where the boys make a great pile of stones in one corner of the square, while the girls stand aside talking to themselves, looking over their shoulders at the boys. This shows the more wild and harsh thoughts of the male gender, though expressed by children than the tender and innocent emotions of the feminine gender. It is mentioned in the story that the men began to gather and survey their own children, spoke of planting and rain, tractors and taxes. Analyzing the above words exposes that it was the men of the village who were worried about the yield and rain and

When the lottery was finally conducted, the ticket with the black spot came to Bill Hutchinson. The rule was that the head of every family picks the ticket from the black box. Then the family of the person with the black ticket has to go through “the lottery” again so that the black spotted ticket comes to the hand of a particular person in the family. So the head of family got two chances to draw and select, whereas every other person of the family had only one chance which decided their fate. This policy proved for other family members. As the ticket was drawn, the wretched ticket with the wicked black spot of agony came to Mr. Hutchinson’s hand. Just at that moment, Tessie started panicking and started shouting that it wasn’t fair the way the lottery was drawn. She claimed that her husband wasn’t given enough time to choose. Moreover, she exclaimed that everybody saw that, when actually there was nothing of that sort and the lottery was conducted very fairly. This expresses the emotional nature of the woman and the love and care she has for her family, that she was rebelling against what was actually right. The sad part about the situation is that when Mrs. Hutchinson was trying to protect her family, Bill rudely told her to shut up when he should have been a bit more considerate to her. When the ticket was drawn for the second time within the Hutchinson family, the unfortunate black spotted ticket came to Tessie herself, which I feel is a terrible tragedy happening to a good and innocent person. Even at this time, instead of consoling her or showing feelings for her and talking to her nicely, her husband just forced the slip of paper out of her hand to look at it.

The writer brings a dramatic and tragic end to the story by finally revealing that the person left with the black spotted ticket was to be stoned to death, and this was supposed to be a sacrifice to the gods for good crops to yield in the village. The astonishing part of the story is that once Tessie was the ‘mark’, no one showed sympathy to her and everyone crudely picked up the stones to stone her to death. Their belie
