Krishnamurti's Intention
The organization “The Order of the Star” was established in 1911 by a group of Theosophists in Holland, proclaiming that Jiddu Krishnamurti was to be the new body of Maitreya, or some kind of Twentieth Century Messiah. Krishnamurti later dissolved the Order of the Star in a speech he gave after his enlightenment in 1929 in front of three thousand members, while many Dutch listened on the radio. This speech is the base for a superior insight that can still be contemplated some 70 years later: that ultimate truth cannot be approached by any course of action, religion, or intellectual contemplation. Krishnamurti began his speech on that August day with complete understanding of what the Order would receive from him. “I maintain that truth is a pathless land; you can’t approach it by any religion or sect. You are accustomed to being told how far you have advanced, what your spiritual state is—how childish. Who but yourself can tell whether you are beautiful or ugly within” (Krishnamurti, 1). In this quote Krishnamurti summarizes what problems he has unmasked within spiritual organizations. Krishnamurti begins to assert that truth cannot be organized, that there is no method of belittling truth down to the same le
If I were to seek out and join a spiritual organization of any kind, I believe it to be hasty to state that it would be like trusting someone else to find the meaning of my life. It depends entirely on the attributes of the organization. It may be that a person can find truth only through himself or his god, otherwise it would be like having someone else taste food for him: he would never actually experience the food himself. But one can still learn from others how to cook. Participation in a spiritual group can help one learn how others see the truth; it need not result in a spiritual lethargy that quenches desire for truth, ruling out any real personal gain. vel as a person without any trial. Truth is nothing to be given or received, and cannot place itself in one’s hands. He claims that a person must find it himself, through trials and obstacles, and defer from any collective spiritual organizations, which would otherwise hinder the journey for truth. He says that if an organization is created with a spiritual purpose, it becomes like a crutch or a weakness in a person, delaying them from real truth (Krishnamurti, 1). As we have seen before, Krishnamurti states time and time again that it is not only impossible to summarize truth and have it delivered to you, but that it cripples you to even assume that it can be reached in that fashion. “By the very creation of that organization, which, you think, will help this authority to lead you to spirituality, you are held in a cage” (Krishnamurti, 2). He refers to The Order of th
