Do you have such strength, determination, and strong will as Phoenix Jackson, an

old colored woman in the story “A Worn Path”. The story took place in December

around Christmas. Phoenix was very small and carried a thin, small cane made from an

umbrella. She was determined to walk a long path through the woods to get to town for

Phoenix came upon many obstacles along her way. At first, a torn bush got caught in her dress, then she had to go through a barbed-wire fence. Phoenix Jackson often talked to herself so she wouldn’t feel alone. On her long path she went through a tall field of dead corn, there she was frightened by a scarecrow, but she laughed it off and danced with the scarecrow to calm her.

As you can see, Phoenix Jackson was not self- centered. She was determined to go to town for her grandson no matter what she had to go through or how far it was to get there. Even though Phoenix was frightened , she did not give up. If she was self-centered she would of took the ten cents she had and bought something for herself. Since it was only her and her grandson, Phoenix did not have anyone to do anything for her. She had to be strong and willing to do for herself and her grandson.

“no sir, I seen plenty go off closer by, in my day, and for less than what I done. He was surprised she was not scared and said that if he had a dime he would give it to her. Him saying that made Phoenix feel better
