Nat Turner

Have you heard of the expression, “God works in mysterious ways”? Well he does. I have chosen the “Confessions of Nat Turner”. And in these confessions, Turner reveals that God led him to bring judgement against the white slave owners because of the institution of slavery. He had a vision in which “white spirits and black spirits engaged in battle, and the sun was darkened – the thunder rolled in the heavens, and blood flowed in streams . . .”

Nat was born a slave. At an early age he showed great signs of intelligence. Reading and writing almost came to him naturally. His mother and grandmother recognized natural marks on his face and body. Those marks revealed spiritual meaning, he was to serve a purpose, that purpose was to serve the lord.

The readings of these confessions are very emotionally and intellectually stimulating. I have only dared to imagine the horrors of the institution of slavery. And one can only picture the setting of the confessions as he sat in his little cell, his arms and legs coffled together and covered in blood. He gives a chilling description of how he and his men, killed and murdered close to 60 white people, one after another. Turner himself describes his motivation, objectives and mental state of his actions. I believe that Nat is a religious fanatic. He reveals how the spirits spoke to him and how he saw signs from heaven to rise up and insurrect.
