America:Living and Breathing in Fear
“If more guns make people safer then America would be one of the safest places in the world, but it is the opposite.” The quote was from Michael Moore’s film Bowling for Columbine; in Moore’s film he tries to discover why and what makes Americans so violent. He takes many different approaches in trying to find out the truth; Moore interviews people like the National Rifle Association president Charlton Heston to shock rocker Marilyn Manson. He came across many different causes as to why we are so violent, but two stood out the most to me.The first cause seemed to be that people are taking the Second Amendment to the extreme. They have taken the “right to bear arms” and turned it into an excuse to keep a loaded gun in every room of the house. People have eliminated the middle man, being the police, and taken the law into their own hands. They are claiming that it is an American tradition and responsibility to be armed. Their argument is that if you are not armed you are not being responsible. In Virgin, Utah ordinance #2000-06-12 state
The second cause that was obvious was the fear that is pumped into us day after day. We are told that our very existence is in jeopardy, from our health to our jobs. We welcome violence and gore into our home everyday without even thinking twice about it. Kids are watching ample amounts of television programs that aren’t even suited for adult consumption, and start thinking that this is acceptable behavior at an early age. They also grow up with a thinking that nothing can harm them and there are no consequences to their actions. Even though murder rates have gone down twenty percent, the coverage of them has sky rocketed to six hundred percent. It was also too brought to my attention that is “seems” that the only people that are committing these crimes are African American males, or at least that is mostly what the news shows us. Our society as turned the black male in to a potential suspect to all crimes. So not only are we being made afraid of crimes but other people. Our trust level with each other keeps lowering with every bias media repo
