Juvenile Crime in New Mexico and the Children’s Code

In the following criminal case a young 15-year-old boy is being convicted of second - degree murder and faces fifteen years in prison. The school often had to call Anthony’s mother to aware her of Anthony ditching classes, but she said there wasn’t much she could do to make him stay in school. His brother had already dropped out of school, which was probably a bad influence upon Anthony. No one in the family participated in school, the community, or church activities.

Anthony was indicated as an adult for first-degree murder by the grand jury. Evidence was presented by the prosecutor that Anthony would not be willing to get help, or treatment. Evidence was then presented by the defense that Anthony would be open
