Meth

A teenager begins by just wanting to have a good time, but in the end it is everything but that. Methamphetamine is a drug also known as “speed”, “meth”, and “chalk”. Meth is a powerfully addictive stimulant. It is made with over-the-counter drugs in clandestine laboratories. Meth is a white, odorless, and bitter tasting crystalline powder that easily dissolves in water and alcohal. Meth comes in many forms, and can be smoked, snorted, orally ingested, or injected.

The effects of meth can be very serious. Meth dramatically affects the central nervous system. This drug is responsible for altering moods depending on how it is taken. Immediately after smoking or injecting the drug, the user experiences an intense rush that lasts only a few minutes, but is described as very pleasurable

Snorting or oral ingestion produces a euphoria high, but not an intense rush. Snorting has effects with three to five minutes; however, oral ingestion creates an effect within fifteen to twenty minutes. This drug has many short-term effects. Meth creates increased attention, activity, and respiration, while decreasing fatigue and appetite. Meth may also cause hypothermia. These short-term effects can be experienced even when meth has been taken in small doses. Oral ingestion and/or snorting produce a long lasting high instead of a rush. This high can reportedly last as long as half a day. Both the intense rush and long lasting high are believed to result from the release of very high levels of neurotransmitter dopamine into the areas of the brain that regulate feelings of pleasure.
