When turning on the television, radio, or simply opening the local newspaper, one is bombarded with news of arrests, murders, homicides, and other such tragedies. There are many things that I don’t agree with in today’s society but, out of all the wrong doings that take place, murder including the death penalty is wrong. I am strongly against the death penalty because it costs the taxpayers too much money, the possible “wrongly accused,” it is cruel and unusual punishment, and the issue of capital punishment being a deterrent.

The first reason the death penalty should be done away with is that it costs the taxpayers too much money. The average death penalty is appealed three times. This means that taxpayers must pay for the same trial three times. These court costs are not cheap. The last issue is of Capital Punishment being a detterant. But does the death penalty really deter crime? Deterrence is basically defined as “the punishment should fit the crime.” Under this concept, the individual committing the crime and society are prevented from committing this action again. In the case of the death penalty, an individual kills another human and he is “punished” for it by death. Punishment is supposed to be temporary penalization for a wrongful action. Death is far from temporary. One is to learn from ones mistakes, so how can the person learn if they are paying for their mistakes with their life? The death lobby wants you to believe that the death penalty deters crime, but it really doesn’t. It has been proven that in states that use the death penalty, murder is more common. Also, in a nationwide survey of police chiefs and sheriffs, capital punishment was ranked last as a way of reducing violent crimes. Only 26 percent thought that the death penalty significantly reduces the number of homicides.

Questions you have to ask yourself about the death penalty. Does a prisoner have the right to die quickly rather than wait for years while the appeals process drags on? Why does the appeals process take so long? Why, in a time when many countries have abolished the death penalty, does the US still execute criminals? Is the death penalty justified, or is it a legalized form of murder? Does the death penalty actually prevent crime by frightening potential crimes?

There’s always the chance of the innocent being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
