Charlotte Temple vs. Sara Smolinsky

Charlotte Temple and Sara Smolinsky are both immigrants. They both came from two different parts of the world. Charlotte comes from England to the U.S. Sara Smolinsky came from Poland and was living in the U.S. Their stories are very different but they both wanted their own independence to feel like a complete woman. They both wanted independence. Sara succeeds because hers is true independence. Charlotte doesn’t because she does it for many different reasons and hers isn’t true independence.

Charlotte Temple was a young woman who was very unsure about herself and the people around her. The people around her told her things that didn’t make sense to her. Charlotte was very gullible. Partly from her being only 15 years old and not having much experience with that big thing called Life. Charlotte was afraid to do anything on her own because of her parents. She never wanted to upset them. That was the last thing she ever wanted to do.

Mother didn’t want Sara to be stuck in New York’s Lower East Side the rest of her life. Sara’s mother wanted her to succeed. Also, Sara knew if she stayed in New York the rest of her life she wouldn’t amount to anything. If she stayed she would be a fish peddler, working other odd jobs, and still be living at home working for her father.

Sara Smolinsky’s story with being an immigrant is very different than Charlotte’s battle with being an immigrant. Sara family comes from Poland. Sara is the youngest daughter of an Orthodox rabbi. Her father had many problems with Sara wanting to go out on her own. Her father would watch what had happened to her older two sisters, Mashah and Bessie. Mashah was the first to leave. At first, Mashah would bring different guys home every other night to see if her father would approve of them. Father knew in his mind that Mashah and Bessie married to men that they didn’t love. Father didn’t really trust anybody they worshiped the Torah such as he did. Another would be if the man they were marrying was wealthy and had a lot of power over other people.

There are two different reasons between Charlotte and Sara regarding their leaving home. Charlotte Temple l
