The feud between the Capulets and Montagues remained strong throughout the play until the death of Romeo and Juliet. This becomes clear to the reader due to the fight in the first scene in Verona Marketplace. During another brawl between Capulets and Montagues, Mercutio (Romeo’s best friend) is killed by the enemy Capulet, Tybalt. Romeo is angered at this, though he tries to restrain himself from reacting. Yet another encounter between only Tybalt and Romeo proves to be disastrous ending in the death of Tybalt (Juliet’s cousin). ntague and Capulet families is one cause of the tragic deaths of the two lovers, as being together became impossible and it was unspeakable to have anything to do with the opposing family. Juliet and Romeo had fallen deeply in love with their enemy – an appalling thing to do in their family’s eyes. The only way to be together was in death. Mercutio and Tybalt played an important part in causing Romeo and Juliet’s death because their arrogance made the hate between the families stronger, thus making the death more probable. The two young lovers are caught in the centre of a senseless feud which is one of the aspects responsible for the two lover’s demise.

Due to all the above factors, the death of Romeo and Juliet was inevitable. Fate, the feud between the families and the actions of characters led to Romeo and Juliet’s tragic death.

A character who would be considered partially responsible for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet was Friar Laurence. This is ironic due to the fact that Friar Laurence’s intention was to help Romeo and Juliet in the hope of eradicating the conflict between the Capulets and Montagues. “In one respect I’ll thy assistant be, for this alliance may so happy prove to turn your households’ rancor to pure love”.
