Should Media Be Censored To Shelter Children?

We live in a technology age that has yielded many different outlets for media to convey information to adults and their children. There is a big controversy over the censorship of these media in order to protect and shelter the children. Censorship should not be imposed on citizens by the government or other agencies because adults have a right to view or listen to what they choose. Additionally, what children are exposed to should be controlled and regulated by their parents. It is their responsibility to monitor what their children watch on television as well as what they hear on the radio and CD’s.

Censorship includes the examination and blocking of books, periodicals, plays, films, television, radio programs, news reports, and other communication media that is shown to, or available, to the public. But when does censorship become necessary? When must an outside group step in and stop what is being shown. A couple of years ago a man pulled out a gun and shot himself in front of a new conference. All the news station had their own video of it and each had to decide when to stop showing the recording of the event. Do they show the man in front of the group of people and then stop? Do they show him taking out the gun and then stop? Do they show him putting the gun to his head and then stop? Do they broadcast his final curse and then stop? Do they show him pulling the trigger and killing himself and then stop? Do they show the entire event and the reactions afterward? Each station decided when to stop.
