The final turning point of the novel reveals Brick’s newfound reverence towards Maggie and her past actions. He realizes her good intent as not being harmful. She felt he deserved to know. He realizes Maggie will do anything to prove her love and commitment to him by proclaiming in front of the whole family, “Announcement of life beginning! A child is coming, sired by Brick, and out of Maggie the Cat! I have Brick’s child in my body, an’ that’s my birthday present to Big Daddy on his birthday!” This risk and final attempt by Maggie drives Brick to discover Maggie’s real intention and her deep love and devotion to him. He finally shows Maggie he accepts this by joining in with her saying, “No, truth is something desperate, an’ she’s got it. Believe me, it’s somethin’ desperate, an’ she’s got it. An’ now if you will stop actin’ as if Brick Pollit was dead an’ buried, invisible, not heard, an go on back to your peep-hole in the wall- I’m drunk, and sleepy- not as alive as Maggie, but still alive…” Brick discovers something within himself and realizes if he does not stop and face his problems he will symbolically die. He agrees to let Maggie help him, showing her the proper respect. His characters reversal from passive to aggressive creates a feeling of happiness and relief in the reader. The audience knows Brick becomes ready to face his problems. Brick no longer relies on his “crutch” for support; he turns to Maggie and symbolically leans on her.
