“The Crucible” was written in the early 1950s and is an allegory of the strong anti-Communist feelings raging in the United States in that period. At that time, congressional committees conducted investigations to root out all Communist supporters and sympathizers in the United States. Similar to the Salem witch trials, suspects were encouraged to confess and identify others in order to escape punishment. When it became clear to the people that regardless of their innocence, they might be condemned, they “confessed” and pointed their fingers at others in an attempt to save themselves, giving people the impression that the United States was being over-run by Communists and perpetuating hysteria. All this, is parallel to the witch trials in the play.
