As Nick meets Gatsby and the others, he sees how they behave and it leaves him disgusted. Although he is of the same class of those he initially socializes with, he becomes disillusioned by their actions. “They were careless people” and they made him uncomfortable. After completing “The Great Gatsby” the reader can start to appreciate how carefully Fitzgerald pieced together the novel before he wrote it. If some techniques were not used the story would not have had the same effect as it did in 1925, when it was first published.

In the introduction to the story, Nick Carraway describes Gatsby after the events “back east”. Immediately, Fitzgerald establishes Gatsby as an exceptionally romantic hero and hopeful dreamer. According to Nick “there was something gorgeous about him”, which he instantaneously contradicts when he declares that Gatsby represents everything he has an “unaffected scorn for”. However, it was not that Nick loathed Gatsby; it was his lifestyle he detested and how people exploited it while generating gossip of his past. The “foul dust in Gatsby’s dream” were the shallow people, such as Jordan Baker and Daisy Buchanan, who would eat his food, drink his alcohol and collectively mock him. These people can be linked to a deadly virsus, which feasted upon a vulnerable young man who lost the love of his life to man who never loved her. In many ways the reader is instructed to feel sorry for Gatsby in his unsuccessful attempt to reacquaint with Daisy. The way he would go to extraordinary lengths to impress her, with his extravagant parties, for example. However, it does not seem like the actions of a man in love but a man desperate for his past.
