Many women especially in South Africa suffer in silence. Many have no one to tell and some just choose not to. Some see the horrifying experience as something to be ashamed of, something they need to hide. In South Africa it occurs every 23 seconds. The horrific experience called rape.
Some people say that your teenage years are some of the most difficult in your life. It forms part of the configuration of your character. It is building the person you one day will be. Decisions considering you future must be taken and again and again teenagers are forced to test their broken wings in spite of how it may hurt. However, a study by CIETafrica in 1998 found that one in every three Johannesburg schoolgirls has experienced sexual violence at school and, of these, only 36% said they reported the episode to someone. This scarring experience causes countless burdens on young teenagers. Often teenagers keep these worries to themselves out of fear that they will be disowned or sometimes there is just no one to tell.

South Africa has the highest per capita rate of REPORTED rape in the world (115.6 for every 100 000 of the population in 1998) and this only includes what South Africa considers rape. The narrow definition rape in South African law excludes the rape of men and male children, oral rape, or rape with objects.
There are certain ways of dealing with the traumatic experience should a friend approach you. Let her talk as much as she wants to and simply listen, let her make her own decisions she has just experienced a situation where her control has been forcefully taken away from her. Once she starts to make her own decisions, she is able to start feeling that she is in control of her life again so encourage her to regain her sense of self and control, give her lots of time and let her know how you feel. You don't need to hide your feelings from her; it can help her to know that you understand her.
