From Mythology to Reality
Is it true that mythology has given us the explanation to many things like the reasons why we have different seasons? In Demeter’s lost daughter story we got a reason. Moreover, why we have constellations in our night sky comes from the stories of Orion, Orpheus, Perseus, Heracles, Jason, and the Golden Fleece. Bellerophon story reflects the way man changed his life based in his beliefs. Nowadays, life differs because of our civilization and advanced technology, but what has not changed is the behavior of humans. Greek mythology deals mainly with the notion of battle that shows in the palace of the Olympus, the Titans, Cadmus, Theseus, The Giants’ Rebellion, The Two Other Rebellions, The Beef Eating Contest, and The Seven against Thebes. These themes are quite the same. Indeed, we do not have gods to rule us anymore, but we have leaders who are supported by the majority to rule our society. These leaders are not different from us, like the gods were from mortals because they had superpowers and could foresee the future. They are humans that feel and make mistakes just like us. The problem is that they become selfish people, and they resemble some of the Olympians. They do not have the power to create thunderbolts, but can make
Thanks to technology, mankind is trying to find a way of life on another planet. Our youth have found this matter exciting and they are willing to participate, but living out there, would they be able to observe the same constellations? Of the Scorpion that remind us of Apollo’s jealousy and lies; the Lyre, the instrument that Orpheus used to charm Hades to get back his wife, and did not succeed. Perseus, Andromeda, Cepheus, and Cassiopeia are constellations too. Because the gods were happy with Perseus’s behavior, he was devoted to the gods forever. The constellation Argo shows the story of Jason. The man who broke faith with his wife and the gods cursed him. All these stories help us to meditate about our behavior and our beliefs, because in these times religion has become controversial. It would not be a surprise if in the near future religion becomes another myth. It could be a mere coincidence how seasons changed because Demeter’s grief for having lost her daughter, Persephone whom Hades abducted. Persephone ate a piece of food of the underworld. Therefore, she could not live on earth again. She had to stay with Hades and this is the cause of winter, but when she returned to surface, she brought spring with her. Now, our Mother Earth has began to grieve because we have taken away from her the natural process with all the pollution that technology produces, the misuse of water, the deforestation, the overpopulation, and the waste disposal. Therefore, we just have partial rain seasons, the seas are getting warmer, and because of the water’s contamination, people are getting sick. Winter has fallen into lethargy these last few years affecting crops and human diseases. To stop the grievance of our Mother Earth some organizations are fighting against contamination, creating recycle programs, and trying to develop in our kids a con
