Dangerous Mind
Ms. Luanne Johnson, a small white woman with blonde hair, applied for teaching at the Park Mont High School, somewhere at the suburbs of South America. His friend Hal Griffith, who is teaching at the same school, recommended her to Ms. Nichols, the School Principal. Fortunately she got a full time position as an academy teacher. As a former U.S. Marine she hardly knew her new job, but then accepted it right away. She will be teaching the most notorious of all the high school classes. These students have brilliant minds; have intelligence more than the average but all brats. Luanne had her first day as a teacher, and it did not made her feel good. The students made fun of her. They were the unpleasant of all students. But then she told herself to continue, and try everything possible to get the attention of her students. On the second day, she tried karate as a drive for the students to listen to her, and it went out good, except for Emilio, the loathsome of all. He is unlikable as a student. He controls the whole class. Callie, another student, said if Ms. Johnson wants to get the whole class, she has to first get Emilio. Her attempt to get the interest of the students in using karate reached the office of the School
Months have passed and now her students have mellowed down. They now easily listen to Ms. J on what she’ll be teaching. They have created empathy inside their classroom. But still Emilio never gave himself a chance to participate. For Ms. J. learning is a powerful tool to survive. It does miraculous things in our lives. And it’s a lifelong reward. In this unsafe world all they have, as their arm and legs are, is their minds. It’s a seemingly unending soap opera, that a trouble would be backed up by another trouble and that the only way out is quitting the fight. But she had proved me wrong; Michelle Pfeiffer was appropriate for the film. Her flexibility, her stern attitude plus her sweet voice and what do we have, a lean mean fighting teacher. And that’s how she portrayed her character, with firmness and kindness all put together. The next day she went to visit Darrell and his brother Lionel at home. Both have been absent from school for about a week, and she thought of convincing them to go back. But the boys’ mother stopped her. The black old lady told her to leave, for her two boys have to learn how to earn money, not just crap poems. Luanne felt disappointed upon hearing it and then left feeling low. Never give up and never lose hope is this movie’s theme. This teacher with the desire of imparting her years experience and knowledge to the youngsters tried and tried until she won their attention. One afternoon while leaving the school premises Angela called her. Emilio had a threat to be killed by a juvenile ex-convict because of stealing Angela to him. Emilio had no choice in his mind but to kill that man first before it kills him. Ms. J. advised him to go with her to her house; it would be safe in there rather than fighting. They reached her place and she tried to talk to him. But he wouldn’t talk about it. Luanne suggested that if Emilio would tell about that guy to Mr. Grundy, he’d bring the guy to a juvenile court, where he’ll get to live in a few months and when the time comes of leaving the place, the guy is intoxicated and wouldn’t even remember Emilio. After their conversation they both went to sleep. Last day of school came. When she entered the room she saw Callie was there. She wanted to see Ms. J. because it was the last day. And her students didn’t want to leave. They said they’d rage against the light. They called Luanne the light. They will rage against Ms. J.’s will to go away. They even gave her candy, as to recall what she had done for them. They all don’t want to lose their teacher, their ‘tambourine man’. And she never left.
