In a foreign embassy there are three American ambassadors that have been taken hostage by foreign rebels. Late in the night, dressed in solid black, a group of six men land on the roof of this same embassy. The roof area is secured, and two snipers are set to secure the perimeters and neutralize threats on surrounding buildings. The remaining four men enter the embassy through a top floor window and proceed with accuracy and precision to flush out and neutralize all terrorists. In the proximity of the second floor they locate the hostages, one team member is left there to protect the ambassadors while the other three secure the remainder of the floor. The hostages and team members evacuate to the roof where they rendezvous with the snipers and a waiting helicopter transport. The six men and the hostages escape from the embassy and their safety is secure. This could be a probable mission for any member of SEAL Team six, a special operations anti-terrorism group. As an elite member of the special operations branch of the United States Navy, a career in the SEALs can offer an enormous challenge but also great rewards.

Today’s SEALs were established in the spring

In addition to normal pay grade and allowances, Naval Special Warfare personnel (SEALs) currently receive various other “bonuses” in their field of operation. They receive one hundred seventy-five dollars a month dive pay, three hundred dollars a month SDV pay (SEAL Delivery Vehicle Teams), two hundred twenty-five dollars a month HALO (jump pay), one hundred ten dollars a month special duty assignment pay, and one hundred dollars month language proficiency pay (for speaking a second language) this is subject to increase if the individual can speak an array of various foreign languages, the more he knows, the more he gets. Aside from pay, there are various other types of advancement in the SEAL career (“Navy” 200-206).

There are many opportunities for a man in SEALs, both in income and in job advancement. SEALs are given an accelerated pay grade because they are special operations units. This means that it takes them less time than usual enlistees to accumulate more money and be bumped into a higher pay bracket. All applicants accepted for the SEAL Challenge Program are enlisted in pay grade E-1 with accelerated advancement to pay grade E-2 upon successful completion of recruit training. After completion of BUD/S (Basic Underwater Demolitions/SEAL) training and after successfully completing Class “A” School authorization is sent through to bump the graduate up to pay grade E-4. However, if an individual is reduced in rate because of disciplinary infractions prior or subsequent to advancement to pay grade E-4, eligibility for accelerated advancement to E-4 is terminated. But this shall not rule out advancement from E-2 to E-3 based on normal advancement criteria. Accelerated advancement to pay grade E-4 alone requires a five-year active duty obligation. If an individual is reduced in rate subsequent to accelerated advancement to pay grade E-4, there is no reduction in active duty obligated service (“Navy Sea Air Land (SEAL) Teams”).

Now that the SEALs had been established in the United States Navy, the service began to break them up into specialized groups to deal with various regions of the world and perform specific operations in those regions. There are a total of eight different SEAL Teams operating in the Navy as of now. SEALs operate from Little Creek, Virginia and Coronado, California. The teams in Coronado are 1,3, and 5. Team One operates in Southwest Asia, Team Three operates in the Middle East, and Team 5 operates in North Korea. The teams in Little Creek are 2, 4, 6, and 8. SEAL Team Two operates in Northern Europe, Team Four operates in South America, Team Six is an anti-terrorist force and can be deployed to any “hot zone” in the world, and Team 8 operates in Africa (“Navy Sea Air Land (SEAL) Teams”).
