Cross Cultural Training

It is important when attempting to train or teach within a new culture to not only understand that culture, but know what is expected of you when educating in the new culture. There are several distinct different types of cultures that are used for classification they are egalitarianism versus hierarchy, individualism versus collectivism, achievement versus relationship, and loose versus tight structure. They are all different cultures that have different expectations of an educator and/or trainer. For successful teaching or training an individual must first identify and then study any new culture they may enter into. A company from Australia asked an expert from Japan to give an efficiency speech to their production department. A winery in California asked a Professor from Italy to give a seminar on winery problem solving. A consultant from Seattle is asked to conduct management training in Mexico. Is there any considerations these people might need to make before they begin training or educating within a new culture?

Even if they are new to these different cultures, each to those people probably recognizes the need to make adjustments for foreign audiences. How can they know which aspects of their content


Egalitarianism is also referred to as power distance. This refers to the thought that the audience might expect more attention will be paid to what the group has in common or that more attention may be paid to how the group is different. In egalitarian cultures inequalities are minimized. People in these types of cultures expect to learn from each others differences and are more free with dialogue while in the training process. Instructor are thought of as peers or coaches. People within these cultures are not afraid to raise their hands or speak up during training. The most egalitarian countries are Austria, Israel, and Denmark. Most English-speaking countries also fall into this category (“Antecedents and Consequences of Personal Attachment in Cross-Cultural Cooperative Ventures”, 2001).

In a collective culture, as opposed to an individualist culture, the emphasis is on the group. Groups are viewed as valuable in learning and problem solving. In this culture when a team or group is formed it is based on existing associations such as ethnicity, religion, or social status. Most Latin countries are considered collectivists. Other countries such as Asian and African countries are also considered collectivists. Speaking in from of the class or group is uncomfortable for collectivists. They are uneasy with open discussions and open disagreements. They feel unity within a group is more important then individual expression. These people train in order ti gain certification as opposed to self improvement such as in individualist cultures.

Achievement-oriented cultures value their strength and focus on winning. People tend to compete for recognition and honors. They are known for their tendency to self promote. If they fail at something they are extremely bothered and their failure causes great amounts of stress. Sympathy is not a strong point for achievement-oriented cultures (“Antecedents and Consequences of Personal Attachment in Cross-Cultural Cooperative Ventures”, 2001).
