Most people in the United States value their freedom of speech, religion, assembly and press. Also, they value being able to make choices and also can choose what they learn. In The Giver by Lois Lowry and Animal Farm by George Orwell, these values are either stripped away, or were never there at all. This essay will discuss basic freedoms, the ability to choose, and the education systems of America compared to these two novels.
Some of the basic freedoms that people in America have are freedom of speech, religion, assembly, press, and many others. The people in The United States enjoy having these freedoms but some take them for granted. Many people do not realize how beneficial these are, and how terrible some other countries can be. In the story Animal Farm, the animals are told what they should believe in, scolded if they said anything too negative, and are ruled by many other totalitarianistic practices. These were all done by the pigs in the animal farm, which are thought to be the smartest animals, but are really just the slyest. They rule the animal farm in a total monarchy and the animals are none the wiser. In The Giver, everything is the same so there is no choice possible at all. The people here are also unknowing of this and almost nothing is ever done. This is another example of a government that many people do not know about but is a very serious matter. These basic freedoms that Americans enjoy, are all torn away by many other governments, but Americans have no idea.
Another principle that many people in America benefit from is the ability to make choices. In many other governments, choices are impossible. For example, in Animal Farm, the pigs rule over everything. The animals cannot make any choices because everything is chosen for them. These pigs choose what they animals eat, how much they work, when they do anything and everything. Also, in The Giver, everything is exactly the same so there is absolutely no choice possible.
