All Quiet On The Western Front

Propaganda has been used as a political and militaristic tool for hundreds of years. With the influence of propaganda, countries can go to war with little more than a few posters and a couple of speeches in the town center. Hitler used the same tool to fight, “for the freedom and independence of our country, for the security of our future welfare and the honour of the nation,”(Hitler). On the other hand, propaganda from two forces can disagree with each other in a battle for influence. One prime example of this battle comes to light in the book All Quiet On The Western Front, by Erich Maria Remarque. In the book, a group of German men fight in World War I assuming the glories of war and honor it brings to their name. To the surprise of the troops, war, in the name of their country turns out to be an unnecessary bloodbath of dyeing soldiers. These soldiers are ordered to sacrifice their lives as a tactic employed by the generals in hope of distracting the enemy. Because of the truthfulness of war expressed by Remarque, Hitler banned the book upon World War II because of the negative propaganda the book created, which was against his cause of world domination that would prove to be unnecessary opposition that could easily be ba

Hitler wanted to use propaganda to manipulate the people into fighting for his own cause. But even Hitler himself admits that propaganda was not successful unless it is, “limited to a few simple themes and these must be represented again and again,” (Hitler). Hitler stressed that propaganda must be, “given time in order that they (the public) may absorb information,” (Hitler). This is exactly what All Quiet On the Western Front could do. Because the book was written in 1928, there was plenty of time for the book to circulate for the common people to absorb and learn about the information and to form individual opinions. This is exactly why Hitler banned the book from Nazi Germany.

One main reason why the book was banned was because Paul realizes for the first time that he is actually fighting against another human being and if given another chance he would not stab the soldier that he ran into in the trench.

The relationship between Kat and Paul was strong, and when any strong relationship is threatened by death, people do not want to go to war. This would be the same exact feeling that a mother would get after reading this book. Hitler would fear the thoughts that people would have after reading this novel because of its emotional elements and truthfulness about war. The people of Germany would therefore not support the war effort if it meant risking the lives of loved ones knowing the high death rates and fatalities.
