Suspense in” Child by Tiger “and “The Most Dangerous Game
Comparing the elements of suspense in” Child by Tiger “and “The Most Dangerous Game” Suspense is the quality in the story which creates emotions of anxiety, excitement and uncertainty in a reader. Richard Connell’s “The Most Dangerous Game” and “The Child by Tiger” are two very much alike suspense short stories. The two authors are from the same time but lived different lifestyles. Connell was a Harvard graduate who served time in World War 1. Unlike Connell, Wolfe lived a more sheltered life in his community in North Carolina. The two Authors use similar elements to bring suspense to the readers. Suspense can be critical in understanding these short stories as whole. It can be the reason why you keep reading or drive you to throw the book across the room. I will be reviewing how the authors used settings, characters, dialogue and conflict to create a suspenseful short story. Suspense becomes a key in judgment of the readers’ opinion of the two short stories. The setting plays a significant part of bringing suspense to each story. In The Most Dangerous Game the story is set on a mysterious island. The island is in the middle of nowhere and is called “Ship-Trap Island.” Connell continues to heig
These observations about the elements shows, how the author’s uses elements to make his story exciting and to draw readers in. The difference between the two stories is the way each author uses the elements of suspense. Connell’s Most Dangerous game was more of a straight forward suspense short story. The reader knows what is going on, but doesn’t know how things are going to play out. There was no real sense of mystery, but a sense of anxiety and urgency. The question the reader was left with is more of “How is he going to get out of this?” At the end of Connell’s story, no questions of uncertainty about the story were left on the table. It was a “pick up the rest of your popcorn and exit the movie theater.” The story was structured and written for the sole purpose of entertaining the reader. . In conclusion, Suspenseful stories are a great read. They not only increase the readers’ curiosity but the uncertainty of a characters fate. Understanding the suspense in a short story may help readers to become aware of where the story is going and even formulate an informed opinion about the work. I myself enjoy suspenseful literature and it interests me to see how different authors compare in entertaining me!! Place can play a big role in suspense. In Thomas Wolfe’s child by Tiger centers on Dick Prosser, a black man returning to town as hired help for Mr. Shepperton. Dick lives in a time and place where people are less than friendly to black people. It is clear that he is of low status in his society and that brings about some interesting and suspenseful events. Maybe if Dick Prosser was in a different setting the story’s suspense would have been less when it came to his conflict with the society. The characters in the short story, “The child by tiger” are very important to the stories suspense. I feel that Dick is the only main character in the story. The story centers are Dick Prosser and we get to know and sympathize with is character. He is a military figure and his very skillful with weapons and in sports. He is looked up to by the young boys as an impressive role model. But where Dick is he is
