summary of A Rose for Emily

Miss Emily Grieson was a small woman who mostly wore black clothes and had eyes that were as dark as coal, but was considered to some as a “ tradition” or a “fallen monument”. She lived in a house which is described as “an eyesore among eyesores” the inside was covered with dust from age and being unused.

Her father had had his taxes remitted because he did great deeds to the town and this was the town’s way of paying him back. When the next generation came about the taxes were no longer going to be remitted, Miss Emily believed that she didn’t have to pay them because of her father, who passed away (she was still living in the past). The new generation of officials went to her house to talk to her but the cold and dry voice of Miss Emily would not agree to pay the taxes. She told them to “see Colonel Sartoris”, who had been deceased for over ten years, and he will tell them about the taxes.

Miss Emily’s father has been dead for about 2 years and in that time she hadn’t come out of the house often and after her “sweetheart” left her she wasn’t seen at all. There was a smell coming from her house that was the subject of some neighbors’ complaints to the authorities.
