Decision-Making by the Book

The book Decision-Making by the Book written by Haddon Robinson and is 166 pages long. This book is a “how to” book that explains ways to find ways to make decisions the right way. His three main principles in the first half of the book are: submission to the sovereign will of God, submission to the moral will of God, and making decisions based on the motive of love and seeking the best for others. In the second half he talks about his personal analysis, using the apostle Paul a lot to make his points.

The first chapter is all about how we as a world have come up with many different ways of making our decisions, many, if not most, are not helpful, and in most cases not in God’s perfect will. In fact, throughout history people have been seeking the mind of God. Some ancient peoples thought that they could find out the mind of their god by looking at the liver. Some others in the ancient world consulted the stars. The Greece and Roman people consulted oracles, but as all these cultures found out, these were all wrong. One thing that has stuck around, and many Christians are close to practicing, is divination. God has strictly forbidden this, but yet some Christians say that they go and clear out their mind and their

I think that this book would be a big help for anyone trying to make some big decisions. Not only the big decisions, but the every day ones. The author has given us some principles for understanding the process of making a decision, and making the right one. I am glad that he did not try to sugar coat it. He made it clear that some decisions will be hard, and sometimes it may even feel like we are making the wrong decision, but we have to make them, so we might as well make the decision that God wants us to.

first thought is what God has in mind. But this is very dangerous; the mind of man is carnal and does not think as God thinks. Some other things that we find Christians doing is playing Biblical roulette, just flipping to a page in the Bible and saying that their answer is in the first verse that they read. These are just a few of the many things that we do.

The third is for our decisions to be motivated by love. This is where we get into doing things for the well being of others. When Jesus was asked what the greatest commandment was, he replied that it was “love the Lord your God with all your heart and all your soul and with all your strength; and love your neighbor as yourself.” (Luke 10) Jesus makes it clear here that we are to love. But what is love, our culture has lost the meaning of this word. It could mean so many things these days. Jesus said in the Aramaic that meant “good will”, so it means that we are to seek the ultimate good of other people. But our overall motivation is to do it because we love God.

Another thing that he mentioned that caught my attention was that we focus on our weaknesses. And because of these weak
