Place and Space
The ides of place or space, two notions that are intergral the performance making process, when looked at clinically seem easy to define, and yet when discussed in a more detailed fashion they become two highly fluid but important terms.According to the Macquarie English Dictionary these terms are defined as: Space - a boundless expanse in which all objects exist and move. A portion of this, an area or volume for a particular purpose. An interval between points or objects; an empty area. Place - a particular part of space or an area. A particular town, district, building, etc I believe that these two terms cannot exist without the other to define it. Space is Boundless and therefore all encompassing, so place exists within the realm of space, but we need this term to differentiate the difference within space, to endow areas with a more defining meaning or purpose. This seems simple enough, so what does it mean to the aspiring theatre maker and the world of the performance? Every performance maker will at one stage have to make a decision (if not a thousand decisions) that involve the use of space and place, and what meanings these will bring to their work. We
The relationship of place, space and performance is one of the utmost importance, the total effect of the work can be totally altered by the values, politics, history, knowledge, and life of the site, and these qualities have enormous ability to portray a message that can be so profoundly deeper than that which is attempted in a traditional performance space. So all care should be taken when making decisions regarding how space and place are manipulated in performance making, they have the ability to produce a truly magical event.
