His lyrics often brought happiness and a sense for a better world to those around him. Through his music, Marley promoted peace and love. And at home he proved to be a good father and husband. Bob Marley, formally known as “Robert Nesta Marley” was born on February 6, 1945 in Nine Miles in the parish of St. Ann, Jamaica. (Sheridan 102) His father Norval Marley was an English marine-officer and his mother Cedella Malcom was a native Jamaican who lived in Rhoden Hall. After Bob was born, his father left his mother, and never married her. Eventually Bob’s mother moved to Kingston, leaving him with his grandparents. (Sheridan 104) Many described Bob Marley as being “A rural child,” (Taylor 33) as he attended school at Stepney in St. Ann. Growing older, Bob soon realized that St. Ann held nothing for him. He even said “It was my cousin Bunny Livingston who encouraged me to move to Kingston” (Taylor 34).

As he grew older, Bob Marley developed a love for the fast life in the big city, as well as the music of Ray Charles and Fats Domingo, who he had said “Influenced me greatly” (Marley Magic).
