Homer Simpson Media Icon

Most people that have seen The Simpsons will agree that Homer is nothing more than a beer drinking, lazy, idiot. There are some however, that see Homer as something more. They see him as a symbol of what America has become. Statistics have shown that people in America have become more lazy, more overweight and in some cases, even less intelligent. These are all characteristics which Homer seems to embellish. People don’t blame Homer for these faults in society, but they look up to him as the king, as the essence of what we as Americans have become.

Homer qualifies as a media icon because of the fact that he is internationally known as the stupid fat guy in that cartoon on TV. All over the country you can hear Homer Simpson’s token phrase “D’OH!” every time someone makes a simple mistake. Homer can be associated with being overweight, laziness and just plain stupidity. Anyone who has ever seen just one episode of The Simpsons will always have the image of Homer Simpson implanted in their brain. Don’t get me wrong, I love The Simpsons, but Homer is just an absolute moron. Homer causes trouble at his workplace, and in his own home. Most of the time, he doesn’t even know that

There is one particular story about Homer that I would like to tell you about. In one episode of The Simpsons, it is discovered that when Homer was younger, he stuffed a full box of 24 crayons up his nose, and then sneezed. He thought that all the crayons had come out, but it turns out that one crayon was left and it was ever so slightly touching his brain. This crayon caused Homer to become stupid. The local Doctor discovers the crayon and removes it and Homer is a genius. He functions normally in society and he even goes with Lisa to the museum. However, this doesn’t last long. Lisa eventually wants the old, dumber Homer back because he was more fun. Homer therefore sacrifices his newfound intelligence in order to make Lisa happy. He has the crayon placed back up his nose to where it once was. This episode shows just how caring and loving that Homer can be. He is a very selfless individual. Most people who watch the show, or know about Homer don’t know that part of his life. Homer seems to never think of himself, he is a generally nice person. He does have a mean streak now and then, but it’s usually focused on his son Bart. Homer never swears other than the occasional “damn” or “crap”. Even those are hardly considered vulgar by today’s standards.

In conclusion I would just like to say that you shouldn’t look at Homer as the idiot that the media makes him out to be. He can also have a nice side where he is both sympathetic and caring. Homer truly is a media icon, but mostly for his stupidity. Stupid equals Homer Simpson, that’s just the way it seems be, and that’s most likely the way it’s going to stay. In closing I would just like to state that Homer Jay Simpson will forever be one of the media’s greatest icons, as a moron, as a candy bar salesman, and even as a father
