Captain James Cook
James Cook was born on the 27th of October 1928, and was one of seven children. His father was a poor farm labourer, and so was James until getting a job at a Grocer’s assistant. Cook then began to work as an apprentice for a firm of ship owners. At the age of 18, James Cook found employment on the Baltic Sea in a Collier(ships for coal transport).In 1755 Cook joined the Royal, Navy of England and was aboard as an able seamen on the ‘Eagle’. Within only 4 years, he had become a master, and spent years charting the North Atlantic coastal waters of Newfoundland, Nova Scotia and the Saint Lawrence River, below Quebec. During that time, Cook played a role in the Seven-Year’s war. Cook was given command of his own ship to chart the St. Lawrence river, leading the way for the Wolfe amphibious assault by the British during the war with the French in Quebec city in 1759. In 1763 he was given command of the schooner Grenville to survey the eastern coasts of Canada over a four-year period. These excellent charts were used up until the early part of the 20th century. On August 26th, The endeavour set sail to observe the transit of Venus and explore new islands in the Pacific Ocean, more importantly; the land the people called ‘the great southern land”. Aboard the ship were also men that the Royal society wanted to study sights the Endeavour would see. Among them were two artists, Sydney Parkinson and Alexander Buchan, a botanist named Joseph banks, and an astronomer Charles Green. Sadly, whilst at a cove that cook named the bay of good success; Buchan had an epileptic fit that ended his life. Cook and his crew reached Tahiti on the 3rd of June 1769. After recovering a scientific item stolen by the natives, Cook successfully observed the transit of Venus in Tahiti. Cook stayed in King George island for three months, not only observing the transit of Venus, but mapping out Tahiti Coast. The transit of Venus was not heading to New Zealand., they were told to sail between the latitudes of 35 degrees and 40degrees south until they site the land discovered by Tasman. The Endeavour stayed in Martaval bay for three months, three of the six there spent charting. After that, Cook set sail for the great southern land.<
