How important is job experience and how can it be beneficial

For many people, a first job is a rite of passage. It is one step further than being juvenile and one step closer to the state of independence. When one becomes hired for the first time, there is a sense of joy and excitement for being chosen to exhibit one’s skills but there is also a sense of apprehension because it allows the uncovering unchartered territories, which can frustrate one if it is not overcome. I discovered many things during the time of my employment and with all I had to overcome it has helped me in numerous ways.

I was hired to work in the Park Operations Department, specifically, Shamu Operation at the entertainment park, Seaworld. I was quite thrilled to obtain my occupation. I worked at my grandma’s business, Dunn’s Rest Haven, an elderly convalescent home, for quite some time but she was more my grandmother than my employer. After I turned in my paperwork I had to go to an orientation. I learned many ways to greet guests such as telling children to walk instead of saying “Don’t run” how to tell someone how far something was in minutes instead of saying it in feet because someone from another country may not understand because they know distance in the metric system. The orientation was very he

After the orientation, I began my training. There were several other trainees just like me, ready to embark on our senior year in only a couple of months. This job was to help us make the summer memorable with fun, laughter and a paycheck in our hands. We all thought the job would be effortless. Greeting guests at the gate, wiping down trash can lids, and sweeping around our area was what we thought was the only thing we had to do. To my astonishment, I was wrong.

Popcorn spills, Shamu souvenir cups, cotton candy stuck to the floor. This is what I encountered most of my summer. People changed their children’s pampers in stadium not throwing in the trash can. We had to “bucket”, which was putting on the latex gloves, picking up all the unnecessary trash and throwing it away in our trash bags. We also had to “pan”, which was sweeping every kernel, every single small particle that on e could see with the human eye. We did this for the whole stadium. Shamu stadium being the biggest stadium in the park, it took awhile. All sixteen, long rows divided by seventeen sections. Once we were finished, we would let people in for the next show. Then the cycle of doom would happen over and over at least five times a day. I dreaded the cleaning every time. I tried to like it but that did not come about. However, I knew I had to do it because it was my job.

As I went back for my interview, I was nervous. I had to wear my uniform because I had just come from school. The interviewer, Marisol, asked me a few questions. I answered them to the best of my ability. She told me I was hired because my answers were clearly stated and just what Seaworld was looking for. A huge smile would not come off my face. I understood I was hired because of my appearance, my conversational skills and my respectful manner. I had every intention to keep these qualities while I was hired.

lpful, not just for working at Seaworld, but it is also useful just to use in everyday life.
