I was born on August 16, 1851 to my parents Col. Robert Trigg Harvey and Anna Marie DeLimbrorx. I am sure my parents didn’t think of me their fifth child, as becoming a financial wizard and presidential candidate. I was born on a farm near Buffalo Virginia, and was named after my mother’s father, William Hope of Kentucky.

As a child I was called Billy, and went to a log schoolhouse during the Civil War. I was lucky for in many areas there were no schools held during the full time of the war. So in May of 1893 I moved back to Chicago. It was here that I started my "Coin Publishing Company". The publishing company was devoted to preaching the free coinage of silver at a ratio to gold of 16 to 1.

The price of silver had fallen badly that year and took down many a rich man in the silver mining area. A lot of them turned to gold, but I didn't like the yellow stuff so I started looking for a new outlet and place to make back his lost money.

With this as a basic for my education, I started reading law, as it was called then with my oldest brother Thomas who was an attorney. Thomas had been a young color bearer in Lee's Army and was wounded. A couple years down the road I then opened a law office in Barboursville, a small West Va. town.
