The Accordian and the FIsh Town
The Accordion and the Fish Town was written by Hayashi Fumiko. Hayashi Fumiko was born in December 1904 and lived until she had a heart attack in June of 1951. Her works were significant because they depicted the national mood of depression and dissatisfaction of post-war Japan so accurately. This era of post-war Japan is known as the Shawa Era. She was possibly Japan’s most distinguished modern woman writer. She began writing as a down and out poet while she was wandering the streets of Tokyo during the 1920’s. She has received many awards including a statue in her honor in front of the library in Onomichi, Japan. Onomichi happens to be the same town in which the short story “The Accordion and the Fish Town” takes place. Hayashi Fumiko grew up the daughter of a poor, inherent peddler. In settling down the little girl can finally return to school. When she left her last school she had been in the middle of her fifth year. She did not want to start school here as the oldest girl in the fifth year. It is decided that she will start the new school as a student in the sixth year. I found a number of different themes in this short story. Individuals vs. group were shown through the ways the older couple and the little girl’s family was treating for being poor or different. Man vs. Nature was shown with the little girl’s family trying to get by with what they had, living day to day. Insider vs. Outsider was also shown through the interactions with the young girl at school and her fellow classmates making fun of her.
