Why WasThere A Sesond Evolution in Russia in November 1917
The 15th of March, 1917, the tsar gives up and abdicates after two weeks of national riots and strikes among soldiers and workers. One of the greatest empires in the world has collapsed like a tower of cards would fall if one of the cards at the bottom was removed. 300 years of autocratic rule was sat to an end suddenly and surprisingly. The “Provisional Government” sat up by the pre-existing Duma, is in hand of power. It doesn’t manage to rule the country for a bit more than 7 months before a new revolution comes up in November. The Bolsheviks seizes the power and leads Russia into a new era of its history. The proletarian dictatorship has begun. Why was there a second revolution? What was the policy of the Provisional Government? Why did it fail? Who were their opponents? How did the Bolsheviks succeed? Russia, after the first revolution, was split into two opponent powers. The Provisional Government sat with the formal power, but met great adversity from the Petrograd Soviet. The Petrograd Soviet had its basis in the Petrograd working class, and consisted of mostly Social revolutionists, Mensheviks and other political groups growing with revolutionary ideas. The Petrograd Soviet had no formal power but was gradual
ly strengthened. The first case leading towards a new revolution was the growing power of the opposing parties, and the politics of the Provisional Government. It did not obtain the support from the people nor improved the situation in Russia. My conclusion will be that there was a second revolution in Russia in November 1917 because of failing policies from the Provisional Government, Bolsheviks being well organized and disciplined, the Kornilov affair opening doors for lucky Bolsheviks and good timing of the coup itself. I think that the revolution could have been avoided, e.g. if the war had been stopped and the elections of a new constituent assembly had been held in a democratic way, the Provisional Government could have succeed in their governing. Without the German support to Lenin there would also have been greater difficulties for the Bolsheviks to stand as strong as they did. Quite a pity for the Russian people this failure, now Russia went from one autocratic rule, through a failed democratic attempt, to another autocratic rule, the proletarian dictatorship…
