The Benefits of Using Correct Hermeneutics in Bible Study

“Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth” (2 Timothy 2:15). The word translated ‘study’ comes from the original Greek word meaning “to hasten, make haste, to exert one’s self, endeavor, or give diligence.” While the best definition involves diligence of effort, this passage is concerned with the urgency of Timothy’s work with the word of God. The urgency for studying God’s word is as important today as it ever has been. Too many people let others to the studying for them. It is vital that our faith rests with the inspired word of God. To gain the knowledge that we need, we must continue in faithful Bible study.

Bible study can be the richest experience of one’s life, or it can prove to be extremely frustrating. One reason some have trouble understanding the word of God is that they fail to make the proper distinction in Scripture. In other words, they fail to use proper hermeneutics in studying the Bible. In this paper, I will attempt to outline some of the benefits of using correct hermeneutics in a Bible Study.

First, however, let us review a couple important definitions

One benefit of proper hermeneutics in a Bible study is that the student will experience spiritual growth and development. An examination of 2 Peter 1:5-11 we see how the Christian is supposed to grow. Verse 5 says “Yea, and for this very cause adding on your part all diligence, in your faith supply virtue; and in your virtue knowledge…” To defend the Gospel, one must know what the scriptures teach. Once a Christian begins to grow he can move on to the ‘meatier’ things contained in the Bible.

Proper hermeneutics in our Bible study will cause us to have a greater faith and be able to teach others the Gospel of Christ without hesitation. Romans 10:17 tell us “So belief cometh of hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.” The more we read and understand, the more faith we will have in our Lord, and his plan of salvation. Once we have the faith, and have rightly divided the Word, we will then be able to teach others the wondrous treasures found in the Scriptures. 1 Peter 3:15-16 says: “but sanctify in your hearts Christ as Lord: being ready always to give answer to every man that asketh you a reason concerning the hope that is in you, yet with meekness and fear: having a good conscience; that, wherein ye are spoken against, they may be put to shame who revile your good manner of life in Christ.” Teaching others what the Bible teaches us, not what we think the Bible says is a true benefit of using proper hermeneutics in our Bible studies.

The bottom line as a Christian is to go to Heaven when our life here is over. We can be assured of our place in the Heavenly kingdom if we do what is asked of us in God’s Holy word. As we travel through this life we are required to work in the vineyard of the Lord; to do this however, we must understand the Bible. Through correct hermeneutics in our Bible studies we can accomplish all of our earthly goals. These benefits that I have mentioned are essential if we are to
