I believe my writing journey truly began in second grade. Throughout the year we wrote small paragraphs about our family members to be made into a book at the end of the year. I finished my entire book in half the time. Mrs. Kirk recognized my excitement and love of writing and suggested to my parents that I take a youth Creative Writing course in summer school.

“Summer school?! I got straight A’s!” was my attitude toward the idea because I took it as an insult. But, I took the class and had a blast expanding my book. I even wrote a fantasy story and created a board game to go along with it.

My next big growth in writing was in fifth grade. Ms. Spuler was the reason kids cried the first day of her class; she was the “witch” of our tiny Catholic school. But I liked her.
